Halloween Micro-Drama Guide: Dragons, Werewolves and the Supernatural Shows on the Vertical 52
By Nirav Patel, Founder, Vertical Charts
If you open a micro-drama app tonight looking for something scary, you’ll find it, but not on our chart. Not one of the 52 titles on the Vertical 52 dated October 29 is a horror series. What the chart does have is 14 supernatural titles: dragon kings, werewolf alphas, a demon prince, a genie, a merman duke and a cursed watch. In vertical drama, the monster almost never hunts the heroine. He marries her. Here’s our Halloween watch guide, built from this week’s chart data, plus a look at why the scary stuff lives somewhere else.
The numbers behind the monsters
We tagged every title on the October 29 chart whose premise depends on something supernatural. Fourteen of the 52 qualify, a little over a quarter. As a group they average a VertiScore of 66.5, against 67.6 for the other 38 titles, so they perform about as well as the chart overall. Three of them sit in the top 10 and six in the top 20. Together they account for about 1.5 billion of the roughly 6.6 billion views and plays the chart represents.
The split inside that group is the interesting part. Dragons are the strongest creature on the chart: three DramaBox dragon titles average a VertiScore of 77.5 and add up to about 410 million views. Werewolves are more common, with five titles across both apps, and have a similar combined audience of about 422 million, but they average just 61.6. Our trope analysis from earlier this week found the same pattern for wolves on the previous chart, with many titles spread out and few near the top. Usual caveat: ReelShort reports plays and DramaBox reports views, so comparisons across the two apps are rough. Our methodology page explains how VertiScore combines velocity, reach, placement and fan saves.
If you want dragons
Deny Me, Dragon King (DramaBox, #2, VertiScore 83.7) is the biggest supernatural show on the chart and one of the biggest shows, full stop. Lyra spends one night with the Dragon King, gets thrown out over a false prophecy, and raises their half-dragon daughter in secret until the girl’s illness forces her back into his world. It has passed 306 million views since its July 22 release and still maxes out our velocity and reach scores. It’s 50 episodes, and the secret-baby setup does most of the work.
Chosen by the Dragon Baby: His Human Mate (DramaBox, #9, 76.4) is new to the chart this week. Emery is betrayed and robbed of her newborn, then ends up as a maid in the Dragon King’s palace, where his silent daughter rejects every shifter in the realm and picks Emery as “Mama.” It’s the softest pick on this list, 54 episodes of found family with a buried secret. It reached about 46 million views within a month of its September 29 release.
No Escape as the Dragon King’s Mate (DramaBox, #14, 72.5) is the darker take. A nurse saves a wounded stranger who turns out to be the Dragon King, and he gives her a choice between becoming his fated mate or dying. It’s 52 episodes built around a 30-day deal, and DramaBox tags it Forced Love.
If you want something closer to gothic
Falling for the Prince at Dark Arts Academy (DramaBox, #4, 82.0) is the most Halloween-appropriate show on the chart and the highest new entry this week. After demons kill her parents, Margo enrolls at Edenfall Academy, a school run by the creatures she hates, and falls for Prince Damien, who secretly bonded her the night of the massacre. She also has angel blood she doesn’t know about. It was released October 19, so its 20 million views are modest, but it earned our top placement score because DramaBox is pushing it hard on its home shelves.
My Cursed Merman Husband Rules the Deep (ReelShort, #46, 56.8) has a properly spooky first act: a duke rumored to be a monster whose seven previous brides all died on their wedding night. Chloe signs the contract in blood anyway. It arrived on ReelShort on October 29, the day our chart was dated, so it’s still tiny at about 428,000 plays, and ReelShort labels it as AI-generated.
He Loved Playing Daddy. I Made Him One for Life (DramaBox, #49, 50.5) is the strangest premise on the chart. A wife uses a cursed watch to grant her husband’s mistress her wish to be “his baby,” literally. It’s 30 episodes of dark revenge fantasy, and it has the highest save rate of any supernatural title on the chart at 5.2%, which suggests the people who find it really commit.
If you want wolves
Rejecting My Five Female Mates (ReelShort, #16, 71.3) is the top werewolf title and has close to 198 million plays since September 8. It flips the usual setup: Caine, an orphan, rejects the five Alpha daughters he spent ten years protecting after a rogue wolf turns them against him. If you’d rather start with something newer, The Hidden Princess at the All-Alpha Academy (DramaBox, #37) puts a princess in disguise at an all-male academy with two fated mates; it’s flagged 18+ on our page. The Alpha and His Nanny Luna (ReelShort, #45) and Mistaken as His Mate: The Luna’s Regret (ReelShort, #38) round out the pack. Both have more than 100 million plays but save rates under 1%, which is why they rank low.
Wild cards
The Great and Powerful Genie (ReelShort, #20) is the most-watched supernatural show here, at about 589 million plays. It’s more of a romance than a creature feature, about a freed genie who has to stay married to a dying billionaire’s granddaughter for five years. Deadliest Prison: The Female Warden Is My Plaything (DramaBox, #41) is the closest thing on the chart to a survival-horror game: a penitentiary full of monsters and traps where anyone who lasts 72 hours walks free. And My Weak Little Dog Is a Legendary Sky Lion (DramaBox, #23) is a rebirth revenge story with a beast companion.
Looking for vampires? None are on this week’s chart. Earlier editions included No More Blood For My Vampire First Love and The Girl Hidden in the Vampire Band, and both pages are still up if you want a fang-and-cape fix.
Where the actual horror is
Real scares are being made in the format, just not by the shows that top the apps. ReelShort’s The Witching Season is a 31-episode horror and suspense anthology made in English, with only the first episode free. Brands have also moved in for the holiday. LBB reports that smart-glasses startup Even Realities commissioned a 10-episode surveillance thriller directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, and Public Storage commissioned a series of short horror films shot in its own facilities for TikTok and Instagram.
Our read is that this split is about the business model. The big apps earn money when viewers unlock the next episode, and the titles that do that most reliably are romances with a fated-mate hook and a secret that comes out late. Horror can sell a cliffhanger, but romance keeps people paying for 50 to 80 episodes. Branded horror doesn’t need paid unlocks, so it can be short, strange and actually scary. For studios, that leaves an opening. A supernatural romance with real dread in it, closer to Dark Arts Academy than to the usual wolf-pack drama, is under-supplied on the chart right now, and this week’s #4 suggests people will watch it.
We’ll see on Thursday’s update whether Dark Arts Academy and Dragon Baby can hold their spots once the holiday is over. Until then, the full Vertical 52 has every show above with its score, history and where to watch.
